My new life!

C’est l’hiver en Australie, et comme le soleil se couche tot (17h30 environ), le diner a tendance a suivre, ce qui laisse quelques heures de libre apres…

Je suis donc bien arrive dimanche dernier a Brisbane, plus exactement a Birkdale, un suburb situe a l’ouest de la ville, a quelques minutes de la mer (tres joli coin, soit dit en passant). Je suis, comme prevu, au pair dans une famille australienne (3 enfants, mais je n’ai a m’occuper –bien grand mot vu leur age– que des 2 dernieres), famille qui m’a super bien accueilli et me fait vraiment partager leur vie.

Bref. Voici donc mon planning quotidien (hors WE bien sur) pour les 3 mois a venir ; planning huile cette semaine pour que tout roule… Je peux vous dire que c’est un changement radical pour moi !

Le matin, apres avoir amene* la plus jeune des filles a l’ecole et pris le train pour Brisbane, 4h de cours d’anglais, moitie de cours « generaux » et moitie de cours specifiques (writing, reading, listening & speaking) suivant les jours. Je ne pars pas de rien**, surtout compare a d’autres, mais il faut s’accrocher au train, notamment pour comprendre les paroles d’une chanson ou detecter les subtilites d’un article scientifique… En tout cas, l’equipe de Langports (l’ecole en question) est tres bien et le melange d’etudiants de toutes les nationalites (Amerique du Sud et pays asiatiques en tete) est super stimulant. Meme si apres plus de 10 ans, retourner sur les bancs de l’ecole et avoir des devoirs a faire est un peu deroutant !

Et l’apres-midi est dediee aux filles de la famille : aller les chercher a la sortie de l’ecole, prendre un snack (equivalent du gouter chez nous) avec elles, puis activites libres (jeux de societe, jeux de balons, ballades sur la cote…) avant de commencer a preparer le diner. Rien de complique ni de desagreable, au contraire !

Les WE sont libres, je vais donc planifier quelques visites aux alentours, a commencer par Brisbane demain !

* Avec la seconde voiture que la famille… J’ai donc du apprendre tres tres vite la conduite a gauche ! Mais au final ca se fait bien, meme si regulierement je m’installe du mauvais cote de la voiture et je met les essuie-glace au lieu du clignotant…

** Parenthese de modestie personnelle : sur 5 niveaux d’entree, Langports m’a mis en niveau 4, et meme 5 pour Reading et Writing.

It’s winter in Australia, and dinner time follows the sunset (about 5.30 pm), so there is few hours before going to sleep…

So, I’m well arrived in Brisbane last Sunday, more precisely in Birkdale, a western suburb of the town, close to the sea (very pretty place, aside). As planned, I’m « au pair » in an Australian family (3 children, but I have to take care –considering their age, it’s exaggerated– only of the 2 daughters), and the family welcomed me very well and really share their lives with me.

Here is my daily schedule (on weekdays only, of course) for the 3 next months… I can tell you it’s a radical shift for me !

On the morning, first I bring* the youngest daughter to her school and I take the train to Brisbane. Then, 4h of English lessons, half with « general » lessons and half with specific lessons (writing, reading, listening & speaking) according to the days. I’m not leaving from nothing**, but you have to cling to the train! For example to understand a song’s lyrics or catch the subtleties of a scientific article… Anyway, Langports (the school) team is very good and the blending of students from many countries (South America and Asian countries, especially) is very challenging. Even if after more than 10 years, it’s not easy to come back to school and to have to do homework!

And I share the afternoon with the daughters: pick up them at school, take a snack with them, and then free activities (board games, ball games, ride on the coast…) before starting to prepare the dinner. Nothing complicated or unpleasant, on the contrary!

Week-ends are free, I will plan some excursions around, starting by Brisbane tomorrow!

* With the family’s second car… So I had to learn very quickly to drive on the left side! But finally it’s OK, even if I often take place on the wrong side of the car and if sometimes I put the wipers instead of the turn signal…

** Bracket of personal modesty : on 5 entry levels, Langports place me in level 4, and 5 for Reading and Writing.
